Recognition Ceremony – Danggaa Trades Skills Centre

17th of November, 2016 was the Grand opening of the ‘Danggaa’ Trade training centre at Moruya High School.

In celebration a Recognition Ceremony took place at the high school with invited guests such as Mrs Ann Sudamalis MP (Member for Gilmore) and Bindarray Jiibiny (Community Elder) who displayed a Smoking Ceremony and Clap Sticks. Welcome speeches started the ceremony by Mr Joe Brierley (Moruya High AEO – Aboriginal Education Officer) and by School Captains (Nakia Moreton-Stewart – Newly elected School Captain).

The Danggaa Trades Skills Centre – named using a traditional Dhurga word described as meaning to eat or take food – was all about equipping local students with the skills they needed to help them get jobs in the future. The trades skills centre’s development including refurbishing the existing home science/food technology spaces to include a commercial kitchen and preparation areas, ancillary spaces and a new covered teaching bistro, as well as providing equipment. Several Moruya High School students are on the path to taking on bigger roles in these communal gatherings as they undertake hospitality studies in a new, purpose-designed building.
